🧊 How to Prepare Your RV for Winter: GoMax RV’s Complete Winterizing Guide

As the Okanagan nights start getting colder, it’s time to think about winterizing your RV. Whether you’re storing it for the season or transporting it for service, taking the right steps now can save you from costly damage when spring rolls around.

At GoMax RV Solutions, we’ve helped thousands of RV owners safely transport their RV’s for winter storage, including drop-off and pick-up at their dealer of choice for winterization. Here’s our complete step-by-step guide to make sure your RV is protected from freezing temperatures, moisture, and pests all season long.

1️⃣ Drain and Protect the Water System

Freezing water can cause major damage to your plumbing and fittings. Before the temperature drops, make sure your water system is completely drained and protected.

Step-by-Step:

  • Turn off the water pump and water heater.

  • Open all faucets, including indoor and outdoor showers.

  • Drain the fresh, gray, and black tanks.

  • Open low-point drains to clear remaining water.

  • Remove and bypass any water filters.

Bypass and Drain the Water Heater:

  • Install or engage the water heater bypass kit.

  • Remove the drain plug/anode rod and allow it to empty completely.

Add RV Antifreeze (non-toxic, pink type):

  1. Close all drains and faucets.

  2. Insert a siphon hose from your water pump into a jug of antifreeze.

  3. Turn on the pump to pull antifreeze through the system.

  4. Open each faucet until pink fluid flows out.

  5. Flush the toilet and run the outside shower until pink appears.

  6. Pour a cup of antifreeze into each drain and the toilet bowl.

💡 Pro Tip: Most RVs require about 2–3 gallons of RV antifreeze.  When all steps are completed, be sure to leave all faucets open and the anode rod out of the water heater.

2️⃣ Battery Care

Cold weather can shorten battery life if not stored properly.

  • Fully charge your battery before winter.

  • If possible, remove it and store it indoors in a cool, dry place.  If you leave the batteries in the RV, be sure to disconnect the wires to prevent any power drain over the winter.

  • Trickle charge monthly to maintain its health.

3️⃣ Propane System Safety

  • Turn off propane tanks.

  • Cover the regulator to prevent moisture buildup.

  • Store portable cylinders in a dry, ventilated area.

4️⃣ Deep Clean Your RV

A clean RV resists mold, mildew, and pests.

  • Empty and clean the fridge/freezer. Leave doors slightly open.

  • Vacuum and wipe down all surfaces.

  • Remove all food items.

  • Place moisture absorbers (like DampRid or baking soda) inside.

5️⃣ Rodent & Pest Prevention

Rodents love warm RVs — keep them out before they move in.

  • Seal openings around plumbing and wiring with steel wool or expanding foam.

  • Place mothballs or peppermint oil in cupboards and storage areas.

  • Set traps or deterrents if needed.

6️⃣ Exterior Protection

Your RV’s exterior takes the brunt of winter weather — keep it sealed and covered.

  • Wash and wax the exterior to protect the finish.

  • Inspect and reseal roof seams, windows, and doors if necessary.

  • Lubricate steps, hinges, and slide-out seals.

  • Cover tires to prevent UV cracking.

  • Use a breathable RV cover (avoid tarps that trap moisture).

7️⃣ Interior & Appliance Prep

  • Turn off and unplug all appliances.

  • Leave cabinet doors slightly open for air flow.

  • Remove bedding and fabrics for long-term storage.

  • Defrost and clean the fridge/freezer completely.

8️⃣ Additional Maintenance Tips

For motorhomes and towable RVs alike:

  • Change the oil and filters before storing.

  • Fill the gas tank and add a fuel stabilizer.

  • Inflate tires to recommended PSI.

  • Verify insurance and storage coverage.
